Well, we went to the photographer and got Mel's dress (which apparently is beautiful, but I've still not seen it). It was a mad rush though, fortunately there are some nice roads between Coventry and Bidford :-)

Spoke to the wedding photographer, given Mel's dress is in as well, we may be going on a madcap dash around Warwickshire on Saturday.

Saw an interesting documentary on five about a chimpanzee called Oliver who came to the world's attention in the 70s, looking scarily like a human/chimp hybrid. It turns out he's just a really odd chimp, or a sub-species, or something else - but it was a really rather good documentary, and impressive on the usually low-brow five.

Having come to the conclusion that there's nothing out there to replace my 5mx, I've bought another one of someone at work. It's all stiff and shiny and new as they only used it a few times :-)

After work we drove up to Camberley as the M&S had got in Mel's order, which we followed by a nice mixed grill (and beer, and wine) at Camberley's Wetherspoon's :-)

Wrote a Gtk2 front-end for wget and improved the patches somewhat. Added them to a new ROX/X11 software page.

perl -e 'print 1..$_,"\n"for(1..<>)'

Perl's great :-)

Also submitted a couple of patches to ROX-Filer so that objects can (finally) be dragged from Mozilla to a filer window and they'll be saved.

"Those who benefit from university education should pay for it."

Unfortunately this wasn't Charles Clarke advocating higher education monies being raised through general taxation, but instead saying why increased and variable fees were "fair". Society benefits from university education - or perhaps we don't need more doctors, teachers etc. It's not enough that teachers, for example, are viewed (and paid) with disdain, we'll make them pay for that pleasure as well?

Second day back at work and it's as fun as ever. It seems that someone leaked a memo which appears to suggest a default desktop of Linux within IBM by the end of 2005. Unfortunately, it talks about the On Demand Workplace (uh-oh) and The Inquirer seems to be as reliable in its articles as The Register :-/

Unfortunately, it was easier said than done - the theory was right but it took a few attempts to get it back up and running. Eventually did, and now we're back up and running with the radiators hotter than they ever were and a much deeper understanding of our "modern" heating system.

Saturday, 03 January 2004

Decorated the bathroom before the carpet gets laid on Monday. Was impressed by how well we did in removing the radiator without making a mess. Unfortunately, when we put it back on and bled the system, it didn't entirely work properly. Eventually the boiler itself cut out on its "Safety Lockout" feature. Doh!

Doing some research (ie. for the rest of the day) gave us a lot of insight into "sealed system" heating systems - it seems like all we have to do tomorrow is top up the water supply in the system (which is under pressure) and then vent the rest of the air in the system.
